Popularized by the 1956 movie Baby Doll starring Carroll Baker essentially marked the beginning of this highly eroticized item of adult apparel. Babydolls often are made of sheer or translucent fabric such as nylon, chiffon and silk. The hemline normally rests about six inches above the knee and may sport a scoop neck. When worn by woman, the legs are fully displayed and some styles emphasize or deliberately expose the breasts. The babydoll is usually sold as a set with matching panties and a typical babydoll is short enough that underwear is visible if worn. Unusual as it may seem, babydoll negligees from the 50's to the early 80's are now considered collectable vintage items.
